Dan's story

Dan Mackay, 36, from Amble, was riding his motorbike up a blind hill near Rothbury when he was forced to make a split-second decision. Dan had to swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid a cyclist, only to realise that he couldn’t navigate the upcoming right-hand corner and slid dangerously across the road towards a looming wall, fence and telegraph pole.

The cyclist called for help, and a first responder from Rothbury arrived on the scene. Identifying the severity of Dan’s injuries, they called for our team. Our paramedic and doctor team treated Dan with strong painkillers and realigned his broken leg to improve the blood flow and provide some pain relief. They transported Dan to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he underwent surgery to place a titanium rod in his leg.

Dan said “GNAAS are fantastic! Chances are I wouldn’t have my leg without them”.

“I still find it hard to believe that the Great North Air Ambulance Service isn’t NHS-funded.

We have all seen the helicopters in the sky and know what it means – that someone nearby requires critical help, and when you see them in the sky you instinctively think ‘help is on the way’.

That is why it is so incredibly important that local companies support this extraordinary service, which provides such essential and often lifesaving on-the-scene care to hundreds of people every year. We are honoured to be a Corporate Partner and are dedicated to supporting their invaluable work. “

“The reason we love to support the Great North Air Ambulance is very, very simple.

We have kids, we have families, the majority of us live in remote areas, not easily reached by main roads, knowing we have the guardian of the north above us is the best peace of mind we could ask for, we literally sleep better and feel more relaxed knowing you guys have our backs.

Over the years of supporting, you we have met so many people with fascinating stories, we are also very lucky to be good friends with some of the paramedics and it really is like knowing a superhero!

Couldn’t think of a more worthy cause. Selfishly our little challenges keep us nice and fit, which surely is a good thing and will lower our chances of ever needing your assistance!

Keep up the great work and thank you so much for making us a corporate partner, it’s absolutely up there with one of my and my company’s best achievements.”

“For many years now in one form or another PMS Fabrications, my colleagues and I have donated where we can to the very worthy cause of the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

A few years ago I realised the true value of what you do for the local community when a best friend of mine was seriously injured in an accident with an electric saw.  Your team attended the site at Cotehill and flew him straight to Newcastle, where he remained for some time with very serious cuts to both legs and arms.  Had it not been for your efficiency and attention I am not sure if my friend would be here today to tell the tale.

This is just one example of the many lives you save each year and is a testament to the vital service you provide.

When I was asked to visit your HQ at Langwathby, I met with Lee Salmon, who showed myself and a colleague from our drawing office exactly what your requirements were to enable the training and store facility to get up and running.

We decided on a new access stairway and high-level handrail system, and after a short while chatting I offered to help the GNAAS by donating the new items free of charge, as a gift and a thank you for the lifesaving service you provide.

I couldn’t think of a better use of support and funding, and hopefully, this helps in a big way to keep GNAAS flying.”
