Step out of your comfort zone and into our brand-new event, Great North Abseil. This is no ordinary challenge, it’s a heart-pounding, breath-taking abseil surrounded by panoramic mountain views in one of the Lake District’s most spectacular locations.
We’ll guide you to the hidden gem of Cathedral Quarry. Once there, you’ll make your way to the top, taking in the sweeping scenery across the Langdale Valley before preparing for the ultimate 150ft abseil into the depths below.
Whether you’re conquering a fear, ticking off a bucket-list challenge, or searching for your next big adventure, this is your moment. Every step and every metre of your descent helps power the missions that bring critical care to those who need it most.

When you take on Great North Abseil at Cathedral Quarry, we’ll support you every step of the way.
You will receive a free GNAAS t-shirt to wear as you make your way down the quarry wall, as well as expert instructors on the day to help you through the abseil. All of your equipment will be provided for you on the day, so you can concentrate on your descent and taking in the awesome views around you.

It takes great courage to take the step into Cathedral Quarry. Whether you do it for your own personal achievement or just to help us raise critical funds, one thing is for certain, you’ll love every second.
Can I wear a GoPro?
Yes! GoPro’s can be worn during your abseil.
Is there an age limit?
The minimum age to abseil at this event is 14. Under 18’s MUST have a parent or legal guardian to accompany them on the day of the abseil.
Is there parking available?
Yes, you’ll be able to park at Hodge Close Quarry, approximately a 1-2km walk from Cathedral Quarry. Please ensure that you are able to complete this walk before signing up for Great North Abseil.
How much do I need to raise?
For this event, you will have a sponsorship target of £250 to raise for our life-saving service.
Is there any equipment required?
You will be required to wear Sensible closed shoes and comfortable, movable clothing. If needed, your hair should also be tied back. Other requirements are as follows:
– No jewellery
– Nothing in pockets
– No phones during your abseil (unless in a zipped pocket)
PLEASE NOTE: You will also be required to wear a snood during your abseil. You can bring your own, or if you’d like to go full GNAAS during your descent, you can purchase your own GNAAS Snood when booking your place.
