Bangers provide bucks for air ambulance

STAFF at a North-East maintenance firm have been devouring sausage sandwiches in a bid to boost a life-saving charity. Once a week, Billy Lathan serves up his meaty treats to colleagues at Mears Group, based in Gateshead. Mr Lathan, of North Tyneside, charges ยฃ1 a sandwich during the service, which has become known as โ€˜Billy’s Bangersโ€™. Each month the money raised is handed to charity, with this monthโ€™s ยฃ100 takings being donated to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). The charity covers the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria and the crews respond to around 1,000 call outs each year throughout the region. 63-year-old Mr Lathan, who has been working at Mears Group for 14 years, has been delivering his flavourful sausage buns since last year and has so far donated around ยฃ700 to local charities. Graeme Huggan, a manager at Mears Group, said: โ€œBillyโ€™s a real character.

โ€œThe cash raised is down to Billyโ€™s hard work and all the dedicated employees at Mears.โ€

The repairs and maintenance company also support GNAAS by donating toner cartridges to the cause.

Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS, said: โ€œThis is a tasty way to raise money for our service – simple but effective. Thank you to all the employees who have donated their hard-earned cash, it ย really is appreciated because every penny counts.โ€
