Take on the trek

Helvellyn is one of the nations favourite walks in the Lake district.ย With spectacular panoramic views of Thirlmere and Striding Edge this will be a walk you’ll never forget!

This is a 15km walk, taking approximately five to six hours to complete.

The guided circular route will start from the east side of Thirlmere which offers a steadier climb to the peak of Helvellyn, before descending to Grisedale Tarn. This route will avoid the more exposed Swirral and Striding Edge.

Helvellyn Hike, frequently asked questions

Are dogs allowed?
Reveal answer icon

Yes! As long as your four-legged friend can comfortably go this distance, they’re more than welcome to join the walk. Please remember to bring their water and nutrition.

How fast do I have to walk?
Reveal answer icon

The walk normally takes between five to six hours but is very much dependant on the whole group. We will walk at the pace of the slowest person!

What should I wear?
Reveal answer icon

We can’t predict the weather, so let’s hope for the best but prepare for all scenarios! Lots of layers allow you to find a comfortable temperature throughout the walk; a technical top, fleece, and lightweight waterproof are good go-to items.

Most importantly, make sure you have some sensible footwear – a pair of walking shoes you have worn comfortably before, with good grip to tackle the terrain.

Should I bring anything with me?
Reveal answer icon

Yes, you will need to bring some essential items. We will send a list of everything needed, including food, hot drinks and a personal first aid kit

Are there any toilets?
Reveal answer icon

The car park has a toilet block, however once we leave the car park Iโ€™m afraid it’s wild peeโ€™s!ย  Please ensure you come with any toiletries you need

Are children allowed?
Reveal answer icon

Due to the challenging steep sections and length you must be 12+ to join the walk. Under 16s must be accompanied by a paying adult.
