GYRO: GNAAS Yearly Ride Out

The GYRO is a new fundraising challenge in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

A cunning play on words with connotations to the gyroscopic effect of both bicycles and helicopters and also to the famous Italian grand tour, it is also an acronym: GNAAS Yearly Ride Out!

The ride is the brain child of a small group of doctors and paramedics from the North East, including some of the Great North Air Ambulance Service critical care team.

If you were thinking of taking on a cycling challenge in aid of GNAAS, then join us in The GYRO!

Base to Base Challenge - 150 miles

The ride is billed as a base to base challenge and is an audacious attempt at linking the two air bases used by the Great North Air Ambulance Service. Ride from the new state-of-the-art base and headquarters in Teesside to the scenic second base in Langwathby and back on this round route.

  • Registration: 0600 – 0750
  • Start: 0800
  • Distance:  150miles (242.3km)
  • Elevation: 8831feet (2691.6meters)
  • Ride Time: 7 – 13 hrs

Challenger Route - 75.9 miles

As an alternative to the Base to Base Challenge, riders will also be able to choose to take on the medium ‘challenger’ route. While shorter, it is still enough to challenge even experienced riders, and just like the B2BC route it features tough climbs that are rewarded with quiet rolling roads through epic scenery.

  • Registration: 0600 – 0750
  • Start: 0800
  • Distance: 75.9miles (122.6km)
  • Elevation: 4277feet (1303.6meters)
  • Ride Time: 4 – 7 hrs
