Speaking to the Chronicle Live, Sergeant Pinner Rana, of the Northumbria Police motor patrols department, said: “This was a serious incident that resulted in a woman [being] taken to hospital with significant injury.

“I would like to thank members of the public who assisted at the scene and would now ask any witnesses to come forward.

“In particular I am looking to trace anyone who may have dash cameras that may have captured the collision. It could be crucial in helping us to understand exactly what has happened.”

Anyone who can help police is asked to call 101 quoting log 479 04/01/20 or report online at the Northumbria Police website
