Two men rescued from Walney Channel


Two men were rescued from Walney Channel yesterday (May 19). The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to Walney, Barrow, at 2.25pm after reports of two men in a dinghy who had fallen overboard. When GNAAS arrived, the pair had been rescued by Barrow RNLI.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to Walney, Barrow, at 2.25pm after reports of two men in a dinghy who had fallen overboard.

When GNAAS arrived, the pair had been rescued by Barrow RNLI. The paramedic and doctor crew assessed and treated one man who had sustained head injuries and was suffering from hypothermia.

He was flown to Royal Lancaster Infirmary in 10 minutes. By road, this journey would have taken around one hour and 7 mins.

GNAAS, Furness Coastguard, Barrow RNLI, North West Ambulance Service, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Barrow police were all involved in the incident which highlighted the great teamwork by emergency services.
