Jess Harrison tells us why she’s taking on Total Warrior for the Great North Air Ambulance Service for a second time.
In 2017 a group of fifteen colleagues from Amec Foster Wheeler (AFW) braved ice, fire, electricity and a lot of mud at Total Warrior to raise £1536 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).
This year the tough team are getting back together to take on Total Warrior for a second time.
One of the Warriors, Jessica Harrison, tells GNAAS about her experience last year and why she was motivated to sign up for round two.
Why did you sign up for Total Warrior last year?
The Great North Air Ambulance Service was a charity that my old workplace had supported, and so I’d been to a few events where we learned about the cost involved in keeping the service going and how the charity is funded. I believe that the air ambulances are an amazing asset for the region and I want to do my bit to keep them in the sky.
What did you have for breakfast on the morning of the race?
A bacon & egg sandwich!
How did you feel at the start line?
I was nervous and worried that I wouldn’t finish or be able to complete the course but it was also impossible to not be excited because of the atmosphere!
What was the toughest obstacle?
Definitely the very first one – the 1.5km run. The distance isn’t so bad but the hills were so steep! It had me questioning what I’d signed myself up for!
Which part (if any!) was the most fun?
I loved the muddy obstacles; they were the ones where there was the most team spirit! Everybody came together to form human chains and to pull people out who’d got stuck. One man even spent 5 minutes or so digging to find my shoe which had sunk!
How did you feel at the finish line?
Very proud of myself for getting through it and ready for a beer!
Why did you sign up to do it again this year?
I’d like to get around the course faster than last year and it’s a good motivator for keeping up a training regime. I also think that it’s important to try to do a little bit where you can to help your local area and to support charities.
