A safety champion crowned winner of the prestigious category is a Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) employee.

This year’s Chronicle Safety Champion was Peter Stead, medical trainer at GNAAS, who has saved hundreds of lives by delivering first aid.

Peter, a former policeman, has taught life-saving procedures to hundreds of community groups, businesses and individuals for seven years with the charity that covers the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria.

Mr Stead, from Northallerton, attended the ceremony with his wife, who he has been married to for 45 years.

He said: “We couldn’t believe it, I looked at her and she looked at me; it took me 2-3 minutes to actually realise I’d won. I’m completely amazed. I was over the moon to have even been shortlisted.

“Working for GNAAS is the best job I’ve ever had.”

The awards ceremony celebrated extra-ordinary people across Tyneside at the Assembly Rooms in Newcastle, and there were 11 categories with accolades for all generations to highlight stories of courage, commitment and community spirit.

Each winner was presented with a trophy on stage in front of their family and friends, who joined each of the finalists at the event. The room was packed with around 250 people when it took place on November 22nd.

Chronicle editor, Darren Thwaites, said: “This year we were inundated with nominations and our judges had a tough job on their hands shortlisting candidates and choosing the winners.

“It’s fantastic to get the chance to pay tribute to such inspirational people. There wasn’t a dry eye left in the house as each of the winners was recognised for their bravery and dedication to the region.”

Jim Entwistle, from GNAAS, said: “We are so pleased that Peter has had his turn in the spotlight, he truly deserves it. His achievements have been recognised.”

The 66-year-old has two children and three grandchildren aged 15, 13 and six.

This week, Mr Stead is in Blythe, Hamsterley Colliery and Carlise sharing his expertise and delivering training courses to businesses and individuals around the region.

GNAAS provides a range of courses that include: First Aid at Work, Defibrillation, Paediatric First Aid and Pre-Hospital Anaesthesia that are taught to a huge variety of people and services such as fire and rescue teams, hotels, schools and sports clubs.
