The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to the scene, near to the power station, at 11:15am on Sunday.
The 71-year-old man had sustained back injuries after being struck by a piece of lifting machinery.
He was treated by the GNAAS aircrew before being airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough in a flight which took five minutes. By road this would have taken around 29 minutes. The patient was stable on arrival.
