A Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) paramedic has praised the heroic efforts of people who saved a man’s life during the Allendale Challenge in rural Northumberland.

The GNAAS aircraft and crew was called to the remote area of Allendale where a man, in his 40s, had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Andy Mawson, GNAAS paramedic, said: “With a truly heroic effort, bystanders, off duty paramedics and the mountain rescue team began CPR and prepared a landing area for the helicopter. This gave the patient the best chance prior to the arrival of the helicopter team. Due to these efforts the GNAAS crew were able to offer further advanced clinical support and restarted the patient’s heart. Following further therapies to stabilise his condition, he was then flown to the Freeman Hospital for specialist cardiac critical care.”

A remarkable example of what can be achieved through teamwork.
