On Sunday we were activated at 2.19pm to reports of a glider which had crashed into the side of The Cheviot in Northumberland.
Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were called out by Northumbria Police to locate the crashed glider as quickly as possible.
Due to snow storm, low cloud, and the terrain of the crash site, we were unable to land in the immediate vicinity.
Our paramedic and doctor team, along with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service personnel and rescue volunteers were airlifted by a search & rescue helicopter to Scald Hill.
They walked to the crash site, by which time the mountain rescue teams had located the glider.
The patient was assessed and treated by our critical care team before being transferred to a stretcher and lowered 400m to below the cloud level.
The coastguard helicopter was able to land and the patient was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
The incident involved 29 members of the emergency services and lasted for eight hours.
