Black Cats to take on Magpies at GNAAS golf day

The North-East’s most fierce footballing rivalry will be reignited on the more genteel surrounds of the golf course at a charity match next week.

Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC have become the latest teams to join the Great North Air Ambulance Service’s golf contest, which takes place on Wednesday, September 5th at Rockliffe Hall Golf Club near Darlington.

Led by captain Lee Cattermole, the Black Cats’ team will take on a Magpies squad led by Steve Harper and featuring Ryan Taylor and James Perch.

They will line-up against teams from Middlesbrough FC, Hartlepool United, Carlisle United and Darlington 1883.

Lee Cattermole said: “We’re looking forward to taking part in the competition. I’ve heard that some of the other teams fancy their chances but we’ve got one or two good players around the dressing room.”

Members of the general public are also being invited to take part in the competition, which is being organised by David Hodgson, former Liverpool striker and ex-manager of Darlington.

“We’ve got the full set of league clubs in the GNAAS area now,” he said. “The response has been amazing, which reflects the esteem in which the charity is held.

“We’d like to attract more members of the public to take part though, and there is still time to sign up to play against some of the North’s most accomplished sportsmen.”

A team of four costs £500 and includes breakfast, 18 holes of championship golf and a two-course evening meal designed by Rockliffe’s award-winning chef Kenny Atkinson.

Breakfast is available from 10.30am, golf starts at 1pm, and the evening meal will commence at 7.30pm. Following the meal there will be entertainment from Kevin Connelly, an auction and a raffle.

Sponsors are needed for prizes throughout the day, including longest drives and nearest the pins, plus team and individual trophies.  Any auction or raffle prizes would be gratefully received.
