Billingham mum’s mission of thanks to rescuers after terrifying road smash

A mum-of-two rescued from a terrifying road crash is to host a family fun day to express her heartfelt thanks to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). Katie Mahoney, 30, was driving home from a night shift on the morning of November 12, when a motorbike careered head-on into her Renault Scenic. The collision, on Wynyard Road between Wynyard and Thorpe Thewles, left Katie with suspected spinal and pelvic damage, as her car veered into a roadside ditch. The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to the scene and on-board medics stabilised her before she was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough in 20 minutes. Luckily, her injuries turned out not to be as serious as first feared but nevertheless, the memory of that near-fateful morning remains all too vivid to Katie, a theatre support worker at North Tees University Hospital, in Stockton. Katie is determined to repay her debt of gratitude to the medical professionals who came to her aid – and is organising an event to raise money for GNAAS. Speaking of her ordeal, Katie, who lives in Billingham, told the Evening Gazette: “The motorcyclist came off his bike and it went straight into the front of my car. “I was knocked unconscious at the scene but paramedics arrived straight away and thanks to GNAAS I got to hospital in almost an hour. “They treated me so well.

“GNAAS not that well-funded and they do such an important job.”
