Boy airlifted after sand dune rescue

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was called to assist other rescue services with an incident on the sand dunes to the north of Bamburgh, Northumberland, yesterday, Sunday August 12th

A 14-year-old boy was playing with friends while on holiday when a large dune collapsed, burying them.

The friends managed to scramble free but the boy was completely covered in sand.

His friends managed to dig his head free before calling for help.

On arrival, working with fire, coastguard and police, we found the patient buried up to his chest in the dunes.

After two hours of digging, the boy was freed.

He had sustained back and leg injuries.

A GNAAS doctor was on scene and after checks he was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle in a stable condition.
