A coastal walk like no other
Join us for Pier 2 Pier, a brand new coastal walk taking in some of the North East’s most stunning seaside scenery.
Starting at Roker Pier, Sunderland and finishing at South Shields Pier, this 8.5 mile route follows the coastline via Whitburn and Souter Lighthouse, offering sweeping sea views, fresh coastal air and plenty of photo-worthy moments along the way.
This is a guided, group walk which follows a fairly flat coastal path, and will take approximately four hours, making it an achievable challenge for walkers of all abilities. Whether you’re taking part solo, with friends, family or colleagues, Pier 2 Pier is the perfect picturesque challenge.

When you sign up, you won’t be alone; we’ll be with you every step of the way. We will send you a free t-shirt as a thank you, so you can wear it proudly on the day. We’re asking participants to raise £100 in sponsorship, which will help us continue our life-saving mission to provide pre-hospital care to the region.

Where is the start/finish?
You will start your Pier 2 Pier Journey at Roker Pier, walking all the way to South Shields Pier via Whitburn and Suiter Lighthouse. You will meet your fellow walkers at Marine Walk Car Park. The address for this car park is as follows:

At the end of your coastal walk, a coach will be ready and waiting to take you back to the starting point.
How fast do I have to walk Pier 2 Pier
This is a group, guided walk. You have 3.5-4.5 hours to complete your walk. For most, this is an achievable pace.
What should I wear?
We can’t predict the weather, so let’s hope for the best but prepare for all scenarios! Lots of layers allow you to find a comfortable temperature throughout the walk; a technical top, fleece, and lightweight waterproof are good go-to items. Most importantly, wear comfortable footwear that would be appropriate for the long walk between the piers.
Is there an age requirement for Pier 2 Pier?
Due to the length and nature of the conditions of this event, participants must be aged 10+, must meet the terms and conditions of the event, and must be accompanied by a legal guardian. As long as you are of age and can manage the length of the walk, you are more than welcome to join us!
