Walker injured in 500ft fall on Helvellyn


A WALKER was airlifted to hospital after falling 500ft on Helvellyn in the Lake District. The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to the scene at 1:50pm on Saturday (March 20). The man, in his early 30s, was descending the peak when he fell from Swirral Edge into Brown Cove and suffered serious multiple injuries. HM Coastguard winched a GNAAS paramedic to the scene to treat the man, alongside Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team members.

The man, in his early 30s, was descending the peak when he fell from Swirral Edge into Brown Cove and suffered serious multiple injuries.

HM Coastguard winched a GNAAS paramedic to the scene to treat the man, alongside Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team members. The man was then airlifted to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary by HM Coastguard in a critical condition.

GNAAS is a charity and needs to raise £4.5m every year to continue to operate.
