Story Homes and Story Contracting Limited have chosen the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) as their charity of the year for 2016.

The charity was voted for by staff at both Cumbria-based businesses. There was five charities to vote for and GNAAS came out on top with around 40 per cent of the votes.

Rebecca Bennett, marketing and communications executive at Story Contracting, said: “GNAAS was chosen through the staff vote as it is very close to people’s hearts, it’s great to be supporting a local charity.

“GNAAS are needed a lot in Cumbria with the Lake District being on its doorstep, there are a lot of active people who could quite easily find themselves in danger and in need of this service.”

The companies will each take part in individual fundraising events as well as coming up in ‘derby rivalry’ contests.

The first fundraiser of the year saw Story Homes take on Story Contracting in an 11-a-side football match at Carlisle United Football Club’s Brunton Park on Saturday May 14.

Story Homes came out on top with a 3-2 victory. The football match raised around £1,000 for the charity, which is wholly dependent on public donations.

The two firms will take on other head-to-head fundraisers in the future including a Contracting v Homes Ryder Cup golf competition.

Alice Gill, PR and communications advisor at Story Homes, said: “It’s an excellent cause to be fundraising for, lots of people have required their services in the past.

“The air ambulance is like a mini hospital in the air, the doctors can anaesthetise and treat patients in the back whilst airborne.”

Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS, said: “It’s great to have both Story Homes and Story Contracting on board for the year ahead.

“Companies like these really help to raise awareness and spread the word to family, friends and customers about the work that we do. It can also be used as a stepping stone for other businesses to come forward and join forces with us.

“I would like to thank them for their support in helping us to raise the vital £4.5 million every year and wish them all good luck for their fundraising for GNAAS.”
