The mayor of a North-East town has announced his latest fundraising events, as he continues his year of support for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

Peter Atkinson, the current mayor of Ferryhill, has been fundraising in a number of different ways including a Halloween quiz night, a wine and cheese evening and a ‘Last Night at the Proms’ themed charity concert.

Mr Atkinson has chosen to back GNAAS as one of his charities during his term of office.

He said: “It’s a very important resource as you hear about it almost every day on the news. It serves so many people and makes a difference in people’s lives.”

For the final fundraiser of 2016, Mr Atkinson along with 16 volunteers, including his wife Carole, took part in the ‘Boxing Day Dip’ at Seaham Beach.

Speaking of the challenge, he said: “We were nervous going into the North Sea in the middle of winter but it was an incredible day. Our volunteers were very brave and mad to take part.

“There was a parade and a crowd of around 900 people cheering us and all the other participants on and we got carried away with the atmosphere. We felt like superstars.”

Mr Atkinson’s fundraisers have generated more than £4,000 so far and he is hoping to collect more with his upcoming events.

His next event – the Ferryhill Mayor Civic Dinner will be held at Ferryhill Masonic Hall on the January 27, with a Burns night theme. He said: “There will be performances from Compass Rose Ceilidh Band and it’s going to be a really good night.”

Mr Atkinson has also lined up another fundraiser where Miss Tess Tickle and the Dragettes will perform their full cabaret show at Mainsforth Community Centre on March 10. He said: “She is a great act. I hope it’s going to be a really successful night.”

All of the money raised from Mr Atkinson’s events will be split three ways between the GNAAS, Ferryhill Ladder Centre and St. Luke’s Church.

The Mayor Civic Dinner is now sold out, however tickets for Miss Tess Tickle are still available for £7 at Ferryhill Town Hall 01740-652157, Mainsforth Community Centre or through Mr Atkinson’s Facebook page, click here.
