A MIDDLESBROUGH couple have raised £650 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) by giving up alcohol for one month.

Jimmy Ray and Carmel Hesse who are pub regulars at The Stainton took on the “Dry January” challenge which sees hordes of people cutting out booze in a month-long effort.

Jimmy, a grandfather-of-three, has already supported GNAAS in the past by tackling Total Warrior, an extreme fitness event. He said: “We took part in Dry January for GNAAS because it is a brilliant charity and 100 per cent needed.

“We’ve still done all the same things we normally do but had soft drinks instead. When all the money comes in I think we will have raised around £650.

“Everyone has been really generous and supportive.”

The pair have seen a weight loss of one-and-a-half-stone between them.

Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS, said: “What a great way to start 2016. We want to thank them for their on-going support. The funds raised will keep our aircraft in the sky.”

The Stainton pub also donated £100 to the cause.
