Keen walkers encouraged to take part in Saltburn charity hike

An army of dedicated walkers are getting ready to hike across the Cleveland Hills and the North York Moors in aid of a vital life-saving service. The long-established 22-mile circular walk, beginning at the Station Hotel in Boosbeck, Saltburn, will raise funds for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) on May 24. Peter Welcome, of the walk committee, said: “The walk goes from strength to strength, and we want to make this the biggest yet.

The more walkers we get, the better the reward for GNAAS. Its not just a walk for local villagers. In the past we have welcomed walkers from across Teesside and the North East and hope to see them again this year.”

The group will leave the Station Hotel on Boosbeck’s High Street at 7.30am and follow a route taking in Gribdale, the Captain Cooks Monument at Easby, Commondale and Birk Brow, before returning back to the pub for a well earned rest, sandwiches and drinks.

Station Hotel landlady, Barbara Holliday, said: “I see the walk as one of the highlights of the pub year. Many pub regulars take part, and I am proud of the efforts they put in to see that the walk is a success.”

The walk has over the years raised thousands of pounds for GNAAS.

Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS, said: “We want to say a massive thank you to everybody taking part. The funds raised will go directly towards keeping our helicopter up in the air and this will without a doubt save lives in the region. We are immensely grateful for their on-going support to the charity.”

Anyone wanting to take part in the walk should contact Peter Welcome on 01287 652988, Bernie Johns on 01287 653774 or Mike Biondi on 01287 651044.
