Family to hold annual fundraiser for GNAAS after crash rescue

A MOTHER whose two children were left fighting for their lives after a head-on car crash will hold an annual fundraising evening for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). Julie Elstob is raising money for the charity after they went to the aid of her children, Jack and Sophie Handyside, when they suffered serious injuries following the crash in Staindrop, County Durham, in September 2012.  The service sent two of its aircraft to the incident where Jack, now 15, and Sophie, now 13, were both put into medically induced comas due to the seriousness of their injuries.  Julie, from Barnard Castle, said: “It’s amazing how far they have come on.

The fundraising night will be held at GlaxoSmithKline Sports and Social Club on Saturday 29 April at 7.30pm.

There will be live music from Borderland, playing soft rock, pop and party anthems.

Speaking of GNAAS, Julie said: “Jack and Sophie are living proof of the amazing work it does. If it wasn’t for them they wouldn’t be here.

“The only thing I can do to show my gratitude is to raise money for the charity, although we will never be able to thank the air ambulance enough for what they did.”

Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS, said: “The family get behind us each year and we appreciate every penny raised. We hope the night is a great success and everyone has a lot of fun.”

Tickets are £10 which include a pie and peas supper. Call Julie on 07707 793954 for tickets.
