A couple celebrating their three year wedding anniversary have given praise to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) after the bridegroom was airlifted on his stag do.
Steve and Laura Wood from Northumberland, will today (May 27th) mark their anniversary and give special thanks to the charity who came to Mr Wood’s aid after a skydive accident.
The IT worker’s harness malfunctioned while jumping at Shotton Airfield, near Peterlee and sent him plummeting to the ground. GNAAS took swift medical action before flying him to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for seven days of treatment.
Mr Wood was left fearing that he would lose the use of his legs after the accident, which happened just five weeks before he was due to tie the knot.
Despite the odds, he walked his fiancée Laura, down the aisle with only a spinal brace that indicated the horror that had ensued weeks earlier.
Mr Wood has paid tribute to the service. He said: “I know GNAAS played a key role in my recovery because they got me to hospital so quickly.
“I married my best friend and that simply would not have happened without the air ambulance being there.
“It is a great service that carries out life-changing work. I always aim to raise awareness because they are not government funded and rely solely on charitable donations.”
Mandy Drake, head of fundraising at GNAAS, said: “We are so pleased that Steve and Laura have given thanks to us on their special day. It is a wonderful story and one that highlights the need for our experienced crew and aircraft. We wish them many more happy years together.”
