Air ambulance offer free school talks

THE Great North Air Ambulance (GNAAS) is enlisting the help of schoolchildren in the region. GNAAS is offering educational sessions to primary schools across the area it covers and is keen for schools that are interested to come forward and learn about the work they do. Charity public liaison assistant, Sophie Weir said: “We have started afresh with an outreach project, looking at a new way in which we work with primary schools across the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. “We have better tailored our talks to help schools achieve their charitable objectives while providing a valuable personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) session for pupils. “The 20-minute talk we are providing will educate pupils about the important duties of the air ambulance and its crew and includes a video animation, as well as the opportunity for children to try on a flying suit and helmet.” Ellenborough and Ewanrigg Infants School in Maryport took part in a recent trial and welcomed Miss Weir from GNAAS, and the charity’s mascot, Miles the Bear.

Ellenborough and Ewanrigg Infants School in Maryport took part in a recent trial and welcomed Miss Weir from GNAAS, and the charity’s mascot, Miles the Bear. Around 45 children were involved in the interactive session.

Headteacher, Mrs Wendy Kendall, said: “The children are currently studying a topic based on people who help us and GNAAS falls into this topic. We have seen a couple of incidents around the area in which the air ambulance attended so we felt the need to educate the children on their services.”

Miss Weir said: “We have received feedback from a handful of schools so far who have all found the talk to be informative and enjoyable.

“It may be that schools are looking for a charity of the year, or it may be that they’re looking for an enlightening and educational assembly, in any case, we can help out.”

Teachers will be given optional support materials to deliver three follow up PSHE sessions to aid further learning.  Schools looking for a more longstanding partnership, can be provided with ongoing support and fundraising materials. There is no obligation to commit to any fundraising however.

GNAAS is now taking bookings for sessions in 2017. To express your interest, click here or call 01768-899150.
