A tractor driver was airlifted earlier this afternoon after being seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on the A66 at Stainmore, on the Pennines.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called at 1.05pm after the tractor had collided with a car on the eastbound carriageway.
GNAAS joined police, road paramedics and highways staff on scene.
The man, 47, was treated on scene by the GNAAS doctor-led trauma team and the North East Ambulance Service crew. He had sustained head and serious back injuries.
He was then flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. The flight took 12 minutes and the man arrived in a stable condition. The A66 has been closed in both directions but the Highways Agency said it is expected to reopen at 5pm today.
