Our volunteer Jill Libby has been recognised for her contribution to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) by Darlington Borough Council.

To mark 150 years since Queen Victoria granted Darlington a Charter of Incorporation, an event was held to honour those individuals in Darlington who selflessly contribute their time and energy to the town and its people, or have done so in the past.

Jill was invited to take afternoon tea with the Major of Darlington, councillor Jan Taylor, and was presented with a certificate of recognition for volunteering in Darlington.

Pete Moody, GNAAS Volunteer Coordinator, said: “Jill has been an administration volunteer with GNAAS for many years, without fail Jill comes into our office in Darlington every Monday to support our finance department where she meticulously counts all of the generous donations received to help keep the charity operational. Jill is also a local face across Yorkshire helping to empty collection tins in local sites. What makes this activity unique is she does this on her bike. Jill’s a true heroine and I’m delighted that she’s been recognised for her efforts.”

Jill was involved in a collision with a car while cycling on the A172 near Faceby, on June 21 2012. She sustained serious injuries to her chest, arm and head and was treated and assessed by GNAAS before being airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Thankfully she has made a good recovery, and since then she has raised more than £5,000 for the charity by completing a fundraising cycle ride, and now volunteers for us.

Jill said: “I’ve been for a lovely afternoon tea with the Mayor of Darlington. Thank you Pete for nominating me as charity volunteer for the award. It was an honour to represent GNAAS.

“The occasion was definitely a stated recognition of the work all volunteers do, not just the lucky ones who were there with the tea and cake. So if it doesn’t sound trite, I share the certificate with all GNAAS’s volunteers. Consider yourselves recognised and thanked by the Mayor and Darlington Borough Council.”
