AN ANONYMOUS benefactor has donated a classic car to the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

The black and gold 1965 Sunbeam Rapier is being auctioned off on eBay, with all of the proceeds going to GNAAS.

Despite its age, the Sunbeam Rapier’s 1.6-litre petrol engine starts first time. The car also has an MOT until June 23, 2018, with the MOT showing no advisories.

The Sunbeam Rapier has had three previous owners before it was donated to GNAAS and comes with two keys.

Clare Crabtree, sales manager from GNAAS Trading Company, said she knew the donor from his previous support but added that he wished to remain anonymous to the public.

She said the car was showing some signs of wear and tear such as a few minor scuffs at the front, but other than that it is in fantastic condition.

She added: “The man who donated the car lives in Kirkby Stephen, which is near our Langwathby air base, and he was also airlifted by an air ambulance many years ago, so GNAAS is a cause that’s close to his heart.
“He prefers to donate cars rather than cash, and this is the sixth car in eight years that he has donated to us.”

Grahame Pickering MBE, chief executive of GNAAS, said: “We’d like to thank the gentleman who selflessly donated this wonderful classic car.
“We are humbled by such an act of generosity. All of the proceeds from the auction will be used to support the work of our helicopters and their life-saving crew.”

The auction runs until September 20. The Sunbeam Rapier is available for viewing by appointment only, Monday to Thursday from 8am to 4pm or Friday from 8am to 3.30pm, in the Newton Aycliffe area.

To arrange an appointment please call 01325-308139.
