GNAAS is offering runners the chance to get in early for the 2013 Great North Run. The charity has 136 spaces available for people wishing to run on its behalf. Participants can run, jog or walk the world's largest half marathon, and at 13.1 miles, it is a challenging yet achievable race.
Over 54,000 runners pound the streets of Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields in aid of their chosen charity every year, and it is considered one of the most exciting events in the sporting calendar.
Janet Hume, of GNAAS, said: “We have more spaces than ever before available and we predict lots of competition for those spots. The money raised will be spent keeping the aircrafts flying across the region and will help us continue the life-saving work we carry out."
The run draws thousands of supporters and competitors alike, creating an electrifying atmosphere which leaves everyone taking part buzzing.
Neil Atkinson, who ran for the charity last year, said: “The training before the run takes time and a lot of hard work, but when you’ve crossed the finish line it’s all worth it. You get a huge sense of personal achievement. The crowd is immense; they are a real support.”
From just 12,000 runners at the very first staging in 1981, the event has now grown to a record 55,000 accepted entrants from over 100,000 applicants in 2012. Starting in Newcastle, the course takes in the iconic Tyne Bridge, goes through Gateshead passing the famous international athletics stadium and finishes in the coastal town of South Shields. On course refreshment and thousands of cheering supporters keep runners motivated along the way.
The event helps raise millions of pounds for charities and worthy ventures worldwide. To run in aid of GNAAS, a £50 non refundable deposit is required and participants must raise in excess of £250.
