How do we Compare?
Quite probably the only single thing the various UK air ambulances have in common is in their title alone. This is by no way a criticism, just simply the fact that all the air ambulance charities started and developed differently, independently determining their own way to suit their own beneficiaries and regions. Consequently there is little to compare and no single set of standards as a benchmark.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service developed from an inert fundraising organisation without any operational and clinical responsibility into the only charity in the country to totally encompass every aspect of operating a helicopter emergency medical service. From fundraising to flying, staples to staff we provide everything.
In 2008, our organisation formed the backbone of a report which was commissioned as guidance to air ambulances throughout the country. It is this document, the Framework for a High Performing Air Ambulance Service, and its recommendations, which provide a reference point when working to address operational issues which may arise. Our clinical practice and procedures also follow guidelines set out by UK HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Services) and its National Clinical Advisory Group.
Of course it is also imperative that we monitor safety, effectiveness and patient experience. Operational and individual performance is assessed through performance indicators, which are essential if we are to track how we are doing.
